ORLANDO, FL—May 15, 2017 – Red Giant Entertainment Inc. (REDG), an innovative Intellectual Property company specializing in high quality characters and content for use in a variety of media and entertainment, today announced the creation of a new revenue-generating comic book publishing wholly-owned sub-imprint, Absolute Comics Group.
“We’re getting back to basics,” stated Benny Powell, current Red Giant CEO. “During the past few years, this company has attempted to do the seemingly impossible, to create entirely new business models from scratch, to go where no company has gone before. Now is the time to return to our roots – creating comics. We’re talking about a more traditional business model – the billion-dollar retail comic book industry – an enterprise we have been successful at before. Now is the time for the Absolute Comics Group.”
The Absolute Comics Group imprint will publish a variety of traditional-format comic book titles, followed by trade paperbacks collecting the issues for those titles. These titles will be distributed through thousands of comic book specialty and book stores worldwide, beginning with the August 2017 Previews order catalog.
The Absolute Comics Group will be comprised of multiple lines:
- A “core” line of titles mining the company-owned Intellectual Property that Red Giant has developed and acquired since inception, such as WAYWARD SONS, DARCHON, AMPED, FIRST DEFENSE, DUEL IDENTITY, etc. – with a twist. These core titles will all exist within a “shared universe!”
- A line of “creator-owned” titles, offering talented creators, both newcomer and established, an exciting new home for bringing their own universes to life.
- A line of licensed titles based on properties from television, movies, video games, and new media to broaden brand awareness.
“With Absolute, we are returning to what we do best — creating comics, creating new characters, worlds and storylines! We have a proven track record of success in this area, and know from our test marketing that the fans are receptive to these creations,” added Powell.
David Campiti, who in 1988 founded a similar comic book company, Innovation Publishing, and took it from startup to North America’s 4th largest comic book publisher by market share in just a few short years on the strength of licensed titles like QUANTUM LEAP, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, and LOST IN SPACE, will also be guiding Absolute to success as Red Giant’s COO.
“Absolute Comics Group will feed into all of our platforms,” explained Campiti. “It will provide a boatload of additional content to generate ad revenue through our digital platforms, and it will create exciting new IP for our film/TV division to develop.”
According to industry statistics website Comichron.com, in January the Direct Market for comic books saw its highest January circulation in twenty years, with 7.57 million copies shipped to comic book specialty stores. In 2015, comic sales crossed the $1 billion mark for the first time since the unprecedented comic boom of the early 1990s, the bull market in which some of today’s top publishers such as Image Comics (publishers of THE WALKING DEAD) and Valiant were originally founded.
